I liked the open-ended structure of Kanto and the fact that most normal trainers didn't go beyond the mid 30s level range. The elite trainers having 20+ levels on everyone else made them feel truly elite. The whole region felt uniform and organic as opposed to newer regions where everything is suspiciously linear and all the opponents are conveniently around your team's levels when you get to them.
