Now that I got to experience it for a second time (after 15 years), I can certainly see the cracks in it.
I won't go over most of it's problems since I believe they have already been discussed to death here, so instead I'll comment on something which I don't recall ever seeing being brought up.
I don't get what the writers were going for with Absol. This character just gets introduced out of nowhere, tells Articuno to fuck off, and then proceeds to do absolutely nothing for the rest of the arc. Even the protag and partner don't seem to acknowledge his presence and just talk among themselves. I even rewatched this part on Youtube to confirm that he has only one, ONE single line in the arc after he joins your party. And that line is just "Is this what i think it is?" (referring to Pokémon Square).
It almost feels like this character was introduced just so that the """fight""" at the end of the arc is a 3 vs 3.
