former evil team member for starters. Shadow Pokemon (Pokemon corrupted by dark energy) are a thing, and the story implies they have no qualms with attacking trainers directly. The story overall is fairly dark compared to most Pokemon games. You're not dealing with a world-destroying deity, but rather an underground crime ring who kidnap both people and Pokemon. Think Team Rocket if they were more ambitious.
However, it's fun because the story doesn't forget it's a fucking Pokemon game made for kids, and as such you have things like Miror B. being one of the main antagonists - a pokeball afro wielding dude with spicy salsa music as his battle theme.
It really was the perfect amount of edge the Pokemon series needed. A shame Gale of Darkness dialed it back.
