Neutral STAB eternabeam hits like a fucking dump truck at 160BP off base 145 SpAtk. Steel/rock maybe, it at least resists Eternabeam while cutting flamethrower (its weakest attack) to neutral damage.
But even a monster rock/steel wall like Bastiodon with a beneficial nature and perfect IVs is down in 2 shots (eternabeam, charge, eternabeam) and it has no hope of setting up on it.
There is no reliable play. It's fine to say "there's not supposed to be a reliable play, you're supposed to lose most of the time and only win when you get lucky", but at least acknowledge it because that's what the change did. It killed the only reliable Big E counterplay strategy and reduced the classic final boss to a luck check.
