With Disney movies, they only really have the movie to sell you on the characters. While most of the new Pokemon get introduced through the games, until SV added the dex images, all you really had to go off for most Pokemon was their sprite/model and a small dex entry snippet, you never really got to see how a Pokemon interacted with the environment, so you had to watch the anime or look at their TCG cards, if that makes sense.
Like, Bulbasaur's RBY sprites are all static and don't show how it attacks, but if I bought a pack of cards and pulled pic related, I would now know that it can shoot seeds from it's bulb. Or seeing it in the anime would show me it has retractable vines too.
