I think what makes Gen 7 stand out as much as it does has to be the competition Level 5 presented with Youkai Watch until it imploded on itself like every Level 5 property ever. So it's not trying to be a "pokemon" game, but a more full fledged proper jrpg.
Which also explains why it'll never be as in vogue as every other generation.
