However, you also know what an owl is, but you are unwilling to abstract about it's context in the design. Decidueye is the ranger to greninja's assassin. Keep in mind, greninja doesn't look evil either any more than decidueye looks dead. It's just that ninja's are morally dubious by nature, which the audience has to know to get the reference. Similarly owls are spooky and associated with the occult, which GF is expecting you to get as a given in this case as well. They'll further expand on it's ghost type when we see its move pool, and when it appears in other media. Just like every other Pokemon since the beginning of the franchise
