Buneary was an unexpected bro for me, too. Caught one in Platinum and it ended up being my main. I hated Normal types at the time, too. Attract and Cute Charm are no fucking joke.
Best part: I happened to name it "Dizzy" due to its sprite or something. Then a couple levels later it learned Dizzy Punch. This companionship was fated.
Another occasion was Drilbur in White 2. I happened to get one with Mold Breaker from the Dream World without realizing what I was getting out of it. I named it "Digger Dan," and seeing "Digger Dan breaks the mold!" every time I sent it out started to warm my heart after a while. Drilbur is now my favorite Pokemon.
