Technically a mess but fun for the time, got me invested in the series when I was five years old. Some features like critical huts being determined by speed are actually quite interesting and potentially worth a re-visit. Trainer movesets sucked, making the games hilariously easy once you were old enough to understand the mechanics. Kanto is still probably the best region layout, offering the player unparalleled choice and freedom. Probably the best selection of Pokemon for the player to build a team with in the entire series, I think. A lot of useful mons and classic designs. Sprite work is inconsistent, but mons like Nidoking, Gyarados and a few others look the best they ever have, imo. Some cool side content (Power Plant, Seafoam Islands) that isn't shoved in your face, too.

Anime tie-in and less enjoyable overall than RB. Pikachu was a bad starter, and while the minor reshuffling of gym leader mons was interesting, it doesn't really change the fact that this gane has less variety than vanilla RB. Better sprites, though.

Favourite games in the series if we're taking nostalgia into account, but they have obvious and well-documented problems. The level curve is fucked, distribution of new mons is terrible, and the games are very easy. BUT, Johto is probably the best region in the series from an aesthetic standpoint, the world is even more full of mystery and wonder than RBY, and I think it has the best rival in the series, since it's someone who is genuinely antagonistic towards you. The enormous post-game is criticised for feeling empty, but as a child and even now, I find it somewhat mind blowing that there are two regions in the game. Sprites are mostly amazing, with only a couple of stinkers (Raikou lmao). Introduced a lot of new features like held items and breeding which completely changed the way that the games were played, for the better. Would perhaps be fair to say that these are the most unbalanced games in the series.
