I actually don't mind the idea of it being always on provided the game is balanced around that fact and that certain Pokemon get more EXP than others based on the amount of effort they put into battle and their levels. I think an ideal solution would be to let players scale the amount of EXP is shared among the party to an extent but keep the total number of experience points earned the same. I think having 1 Pokemon be able to get 100% of the exp isn't that great, keeping the EXP spread throughout the team will help keep certain Pokemon from being overleveled and prevent players from just sweeping through the game with their starter.
The problem with the EXP share in Gen 6 was simply that the games were not designed around it and having it on tripled the amount of EXP you got. Whatever EXP sharing system is used, the games must be designed with it in mind.
I would bring back some basic difficulty options. The "hard mode" would be like BW2's, key story fights and gym leaders would have Pokemon with 2-4 extra levels, maybe all have held items and maybe add an extra Pokemon to their team.
