That is my problem with people hyping up Platinum, HGSS, BW, and BW2. They are just another set of mainline Pokemon games. They are certainly not bad but they don't stand out at all. Contrarily, their strength is in not doing anything new and just sticking to do formula and trying to add polish and features. So people go into it expecting to be overwhelmed and unsurprisingly the game don't deliver on the hype. Mainline Pokemon games are very subjective because objectively the are all similar and use the same formula. It depends on if you like the nostalgia a retro appeal of gens 1 and 2, but can put up with some archaic functions; the simplicity but barrenness of gen 3, the slow but rich world of gen 4, the feature rich but uneventful gen 5, the innovative but seemingly incomplete gen 6, the beautiful but suffocating gen 7, or gen 8 that gets as much right as it gets wrong. It's unlikely people will feel the same about each mainline game. Hence why time will end /vp/ will still be fighting about which gen was best.
tldr: overrated games are overrated
