The locations feel cramped, like they hadn't figured out how to transition the 2D words to a 3D environment. Also missing how those games used colour. You leave Shalour City and are met with a 3 square wide river, I'm pretty sure I could jump that shit and it spoils any sense of a grand adventure. Laverre is the only town that really stuck with me as it actually had a strong aesthetic.
Coumarine is has the grass gym, a train station and port yet barely any of it bleeds into the world and creates a strong sense of identity. None of it comes off like a big deal especial for such a small area. It should change from this very sea side port with lots going on, to this beautiful flowery town. The train track should be grand and actually something you walk past to get it in your head. Instead it is the bare minimum, fuck all attempt at theming and then right under with no transition you get a desert. It just seems so sloppy.
