Every game from BW2 onwards includes a wide range of Pokemon from every Generation, giving players more freedom with team building. XY in particular has very generous encounter tables where you aren't running into the same Pokemon all the time. Apart from giving players more options, it also avoids the problem that older games had where you would see Geodude/Zubat/Tentacool spawn more than anything else in multiple areas over and over.
