Something that might help explain things to you is BW contained a massive rebalance in terms of typical mon HP and damage output.
A single stage that attacks two weaknesses, has 80hp, 1 retreat cost, with a 40 damage attack for 3 colorless so can use double colorless and be slot into any color deck, that's really good by pre-BW standards.
For comparison, picrel dominated the meta for a while.
