Was he still eligible to become a captain and angling to get recognized? Did he just find another jerk to model himself after? Was he a higher up in that group so leadership naturally fell to him, or was he just another random trainer with nowhere else to go after the village was destroyed? Masters did a bit to show why people would follow him in the first place despite him being a dick sometimes.
