I don't really follow the franchise as much as I did when I was a kid but it feels like it lost what little teeth it used to have, it's impossible to lose at the games, to not know where your next goal is, you now have a "friendly rival", EXP share on by default, help at every turn, no darker moments or implications, anime scrubbed and sanitized as well etc.
Meanwhile my favorite monster game experience was in Digimon World 3 having no fucking clue where to go next and getting raped by Pharaohmon, because finally figuring out where to go next or how to beat him felt satisfying.
