People who wanted Ash gone were fans of YGO & Digimon who want Pokemon to be like YGO and Digimon. However Pokemon weren't like those type of show, it was more similar to Doraemon and Dragonball that entirely carried by the popularity of its character. After all, Pokemon is not obligated to make an anime series and other video game franchise does not have anime series that run as long as Pokemon. The only reason Pokemon keep producing the anime was because Ash and TRio had a huge fanbase following them .
Just look at how badly Boruto fallen after Naruto was removed, even Dragonball failed to replace Goku with Gohan.
