You can definitely exceed 50% area bonus however, my Greengrass Isle bonus is currently 55%.
Something to note about the Pokémon level caps that increase with your current research rank, is that it doesn't occur at every 5 research levels.

As the game progresses and hard caps are lifted, I'm expecting it'll be done 5 ranks/levels at a time.
Serebii reports that max rank of 55 has a max Pokémon level 55.

I don't know if anyone has actually hit rank 55 yet, but I'm hopeful but doubtful that level 60 is available at rank 55, due to the official news in-game stating 55 to be the cap.
