For two gens previous they have tried to work character avatars in via NPC class sprites, the first time randomly and the second time with choice. Character customization isn't impossible with 2D sprites, but it's... fiddly. There was no doubt in my mind that GF would jump to customization the moment they made a fully 3D game.
Imagine this screen with nothing but Brendans and Mays. It would be pointless, might as well just use a list of names since it would provide no information. This isn't to say that the Brendan and May costumes won't be the basic outfits, however.
