Really only the Gen 1 and Gen 3 fossils actually feel ancient and distinct from the rest of the roster. Starting from Gen 4 on, they kinda just look like any old Pokemon.
So what to do? Well, you make them look emotionally ancient. The dragging fins, half lidded eyes, drooping facial feature, hunched back. All blending naturally with a turtle design, but gives you the impression of an old man struggling to move.
