The story of poke'mon's competitive play and that of the creation and implementation of rules in the UFC have sting parallels, in the first UFC there were no weight classes, no restricted moves outside of groin attacks and eye gouging, in gen 1 everyone ran mewtwo and power was everything, fast forward to today, there are sophisticated rules in both that allow for men and now women of any size to compete without the fear of being killed or mamed, in poke'mon there are accepted tiers which allow each pok'emon to battle against other pokemon with similar stats, and general usefulness, and like eye gouging and groin attacks there are now a handful of other moves, abilities etc that are now banned because the use of which would hurt, rather than help the meta game. I personally loved the early UFC with no regulations and bad ass brutality, but in general it was bad for the emerging sports and hard on the fighters.
