Like said, best path may be for her to have grown since she travelled, and realized how good she had it.
Maybe even at the very end, saying to the audience only (i.e. a whisper) that she realized too late she loved him, but knows it's too late now.It would be great because it would be redemption, and at the very same time, heartbreak.
