Hypno is an easily-influenceable-trance-like state and I headcannon Aegislash is pure puppetry—you hold it and it gains control over your body, not necessarily your mind. With both cases, it's simple enough to undo the control, just wake the person up or get them to stop holding the cursed Pokemon.
I think then that Malamar is mindrape of the more horrific variety, frying your nerves and shuffling your emotions to permanently fix your perception. You get strapped down by the tentacles, stare at the pretty blinking colors, and end up brainwashed to it's liking. Now you feel deep and inexplicable fondness for Malamar, more than enough to kill and die for it. You get wiped of previous relationships and turn insane-cultist levels of obsessed towards feeding it and preserving it. If this can be undone at all, it'd probably take months of therapy and healthy doses of amnesiacs. So a bit Cthulu-like, yeah.
