>>20589096Nintendo Power for me, that same write up where they showed it was exploding in japan.
They called it "pocket monsters" which I thought meant it was "monster in my pocket" which was a small fad in the early 90's that had a tv show and a video game but i really only ever collected the little rubber figures, but i LOVED those little figures.
when i read the article i thought they were coming back and got wicked excited (the article even showed a bunch of little figures in one picture) I probably waited almost an entire year before nintendo power mentioned it again but i'd type in "pocket monsters" on my computer which JUST got internet and go to japanese sites and look at the pictures that would slowly load. I even remember bringing the magazine to the park with me with a girl i liked and showing here the article she wasnt very interested but all i wanted to do was talk about pokemon, months later she got really into it too and was grateful that i let her now about it before everybody else.
I was right there watching the anime day 1 on WB (though i distinctly remember missed the episode about beedrill cause i went camping), i told a kid at the camp ground about the show though cause all i was thinking about that day was missing the episode(no one had really heard of it yet at that point) and a few months later after pokemon exploded he sent me a letter thanking me for getting him into it.
bought the game the first day it came out with a different friend from school, i got red he got blue..
I heard among the millions of pokemon law suitsthat monster in my pocket had sued pokemon over the name. not to be a total hipster here but literally thanks to "monster in my pocket" im pretty certain i was one of the first kids in the U.S. to go nuts over pokemon.
