The ninja frog is a legitimately great cool and fun design that screams widespread popularity and success, especially up against the other Kalos starters, which also benefitted from a good showing in the anime and being selected for smash by Sakurai's personal tastes. You can't just put any new starter final evo in smash (Incineroar) or shill it in the show (Incineroar and Cinderace) or even have it ape the amphibian's in-game battle attributes (Cinderace) and expect the same reception.
But then again, these are the same people that didn't understand everything that made Lucario so successful when launching Zoroark, so who knows if they'll ever learn.
