Reverse that system and allow it to shoot water/bubbles through these membranes, let the middle evolution develop these on other locations (claws, maybe?) and defend itself by forming spines made out of water from them, and turn the final stage into a Water/Fighting wrestler that pins its opponents with spiny leg locks. Its special technique is the Boston crab, obviously, and it competes with Crabrawler and Crabominable whenever possible.
Them things are really cute too, look at their little Orz faces.
