Pokemon were treated like scifi monsters instead of 1-to-1 replacements for animals. Legendaries were Darwinian instead of pseudoreligious. The world was a vaguely post-apocalyptic version of our world instead of a utopian planet full of regions that coincidentally look like theme park versions of real world countries.
