The point of an RPG is to self-insert into a blank character and thereby create your own spin on what their personality and story is like. This is why you see so many different takes on what the older protagonists' personalities were and how their stories unfolded, because they were mirrors reflecting the player. The problem with the newer games is that they are not RPGs. They are stories with RPG-lite elements. This isn't necessarily better or worse, since that depends on your subjective preference between storytelling or immersion, but of course we could always spend a few hours fruitlessly calling each other assholes over it since that seems to be the point of this thread.
