You battle 'mons, you capture 'mons, fight and evil organization and gather gym badges.
The region itself is also just like the others (with the exeption of Unova and Alola). Non linear structure with linear progression i.e needing to backtravel at certain points to progress but not having a choice in what order to fulfill your objectives.
And if you're talking about the nature focusd setting that you dislike then that's entirely subjective.
