Feraligatr's ferocious and intimidating nature fits with Silver's personality and team very well. Like how Silver pushes you out of the way in the beginning and stalks you throughout the game, Feraligatr chases it's prey and tears them up with it's sharp teeth.
Of course, this is simply headcanon. But it makes the most sense.
