I think the Hoenn region itself is the best in the series, as far as the land areas go. Lots of cool places like the desert, route 113, mt. pyre, etc... I understand what they wanted to do with the water/land balance, but they REALLLLY fucked it up by making the water routes boring, lifeless and slow.
As for game mechanics, Gen 3 introduced a lot of nice shit and cool shit. Abilities, double battles, secret bases, battle frontier, etc. As well as did a complete overhaul on all the mechanics. But then they decided to take all the neat shit from the previous games like Day/night, tons of timed events, apricorns, etc. They really dropped the bar with that shit and it was just disappointing.
Team Aqua/Magma are okay. Not much to say about them, they're the bad guys that do bad things because they're bad. I suppose some people dislike that we didn't face Team Rocket again, but I really don't care. All the evil teams are basically the same to me.
May is pretty fuckable, too.
tl;dr Hoenn is good, but has huge flaws and everyone on /vp/ cares way too much about it
