The reason was never explained but there are 2 possibilities.
>Server issues (unlikely, the game must know were the mons are in order to make them appear on your screen)>Niantic was concerned that people was looking too much at their phones instead of the real world and that detracted them from the experience they were trying to createEither way they just disabled it, removed it, hoped that everyone would forget about it as the playerbase started to decrease and one day, exactly 2 months ago, they enabled this system in SF and said it was in beta. And they never talked about it again.
I've never been before part of a community that relies on such a shitty developer.
