I'm still trying to figure out what it is about Gen IV that apparently so god awful.
Was it the starters? No, it can't be that because they're fucking incredible and raised the standards for what we expect from starters. It's part of why Gen V's starters disappointed so badly.
Was it the league challenge? No, Platinum is widely considered to be the hardest game to Nuzlocke, and that's mainly because of the gym leaders and wild pokemon combos.
Was it the story? Maybe, some people think Pokemon should relegate itself to petty money laundering criminals and no legendaries. In this case, the tale of a major corporation being a cult hell-bent on catching legendaries and reshaping reality would piss them off.
Was it the pokedex?
Nah, it can't be. Gen 2 added more babies, Staraptor is a fucking monster, Simple Bibarel is scary and a glorious HM slave, Luxray is cool, Roselia got a full evo family, Gible was extremely well hidden and wound up being one of the most powerful pseudos, Riolu and Lucario have great stats, moves and typing, Hippowdon is a sand hippo with nice color variations, Rotom is a Pulseman poltergeist with ridiculous versatility, etc...
Was it the features? Were Poketch, Pokeradar, Bike with adjustable gears, Gym leader rematch club, Infinite Bag, online trading and battling, scaling levels to 50 or 100 in battles against friends, etc...
Were these really that bad?
Was it the region? A volcanic island with a huge landmass equivalent in size to Johto+Kanto, with the largest mountain in the pokemon universe in the middle. Was it the lack of long water routes that made the region bad? Was it the high level post-game Battle Area with Team Galactic epilogue and Heatran side story that was bad? Was it the optional routes strewn about? Was it the lack of gates unlike the previous 3 gens?
How about the characters, are they the problem?
Were Cynthia, the E4, Rowan, Looker and the gym leaders godawful?
Really, I'd like to know.
