I liked the XY guys because they just kind of of compete for fun. Calem/Serena is the only rival who takes battles seriously, and ends up getting depressed after losing too many fights. Simple message, but its ok. The main problem with them and most friendly rivals is how much they try to push the friendship thing without really earning it. Like when they give you a nickname after meeting you, or the fireworks thing with Shauna. Feels unnatural because you've spent no time getting to know them?
Cheren/Bianca are the only time where this felt ok, because
