It wasn't so much ambiguous as it was trying to be charizard 2.0 and they had to add a bow to 'Zard's design to hint it was female. That the re-design pretty much turned it into a 1920's flappergirl channeller kinda proves that (wouldn't need to make it more girly if it was initially, you know).
