Gen 1 felt more realistic. It was like a very close-to-home world, but now with magical animals everyone fights with but thats it. There were crime organizations, thugs, cops, references to war, pollution, genetics, and regular everyday things strewn about. The game came out in the 90's, and it reflected that zeitgeist pretty well ingame. Red and Blue themselves really are microcosms of the 90's fit into a square gameboy cartridges.
Now the world kinda feels too pristine, crime organizations look like either retards or astronauts, and the games are all about "stop the god pokemon from destroying the earth" or some really anime stuff. The world feels far detached from us now, and is much more fantastical.
