I picked the Unova starters because I feel they're the most balanced viability-wise, and the Normal-type is the type your starter is strong against. The Psychic-type is a weaker two-stage family, the Ghost-type is meant to counter your starter (Trevenant learns moves like X-Scissor and Poison Jab and Serperior gets nothing, Chandelure is immune to both of Emboar's STABs, and Jellicent resists or is immune to everything Samurott learns), and the two are supposed to look similar. And then Granbull and Druddigon are there because they're pure types that look nice together.
