So while I haven't posted in a while, that doesn't mean I haven't been playing. I managed to make my way not only through Sunnyshore but I arrived at the Pokemon League. Throughout that my levels have varied so I'll try to briefly summarize:
The 8th gym was fairly simple but freaking weird. There was a schoolboy with a Mr Mime, and out of sheer paranoia I switched Talos out of the way into Poseidon, and he ended up using Magical Leaf. After everything, I would have lost Talos to an offtype random in a gym. Really made my heart skip a beat but I'm glad I switched. Volkner's biggest threat was Ambipom, which is just bizarre to me. This game's gyms were just super strange and hard to properly plan for. After clearing this, my team was around 47-49.
The next stretch encouraged me to go back and do some cleanup work and I managed to steal a Lucky Egg from a Chansey, but the process took several hours so I'm not sure if I actually saved any time. I also managed to get some nice berries from the home in Pastoria, so that's going to be great for the E4. At the point of beating my Rival and clearing Victory Road, my team was 51-55.
So at this point I've done it. I actually managed to hit the league with zero casualties. Win or lose at this point I'm really happy with how this run has gone (as sloooow as its been) and I have a few new monsters to fall back on if I actually wipe, so I feel like I'm in a good spot.
That said, the grind has been atrocious. It took me ages to get up to this point thanks to the general slow speed of the game, but part of that is my fault due to how my team is composed, so that is on me. In the time it took me to level it looks like people have cleared whole leagues, haha. But still, I've had a ton of fun. I actually reached Victory Road at sunset, so battling trainers on red water and being rewarded by that nice piano tune was a real treat.
