The gym itself is like an obstacle course that you need to traverse using your bike, switching gears to get through the different paths. Each path has a switch that you must activate, and once they are all active, the path to the leader will open.
The gym leader himself is a masked hero that you meet shortly after you reach the second gym town, and he helps you get your starter back after from the region's villainous team, who attempt to steal it. He shows up a few more times, giving you hints and items to help you on your quest and at one point, he teams up with you in a double battle in one of the evil team's hideouts like Steven in Emerald. When you talk to him, he reveals his true identity and challenges you to a battle to see just how strong you've become.
