To incentivate backtracking and to get rid of the map grid system in a way, maybe you could incorporate whirlpools or a different new hm into the rivers? This way the map feels more real/full, and the game feels fresher and innovative in a way, resembling 2D zelda maps. Also, following the same idea of gridless map, maybe you could expand the map into the north after getting the waterfall HM?
