enemy pokemon are too low, so there's a drought of exp., so it's hard to train up new team members. if you try to add new teammates during the midgame, there won't be enough exp. to go around and you'll be really low-leveled on average. if you don't, and just run through the game with 2-3 pokemon, you'll be far stronger than anything else and the game will become a slog where you sweep everyone.
