In the west this is switched to Charizard and Blastoise and it gives another impression, Red -> Charizard and Blue (Green) -> Blastoise of a fierce rivarly.
In Japan it's Charizard and Venusaur, and it was advertised as Red -> Venusaur and Green -> Charizard. Masuda says that the color green and leaves are a symbol of peace, and doesn't like red/fire and blue/water because it symbolizes conflict. Red is supposed to bring peace. Charizard is a fierce and aggressive looking pokemon, specially back then (nowadays is often drawn looking friendly), it may or may not repressent Green's rashness and desperation to get ahead.
