The story is extra fluff to give the game a bit more breadth, and like every element outside the core gameplay of exploring, battling, and collecting, is ultimately of lighthearted unimportance. I get that most of the people on this board started with gen 4/5 and were tricked into believing that pokemon was a jrpg; the purpose of which was to insert as a shonen protagonist and be browbeaten with children's cartoon-tier dialogue, but once upon a time the series wasn't so bogged down with stupid bullshit for autists trying to prop up their failed childhoods by playing make believe with something created for a demographic far below their development level.
