You're right, unfortunately. The plot of the game had the potential to be interesting but was never fully explored. They desperately needed to be followed up with Pokemon Z but ultimately they were so weak GF wimped out of fixing their problems and they were dusted under the carpet.
It did give us a bunch of awesome new Pokemon, Sycamore, Serena and Poke Amie, so I try and give it points for all that.
