I'm including remakes in their respective gens. HGSS is quite possibly the best pokemon game.
3: Hoenn has incredible environments, likable characters, and 3 was the pinnacle of the style presented by games 1-3. Gen 4 sort of made a jump into 2.5d. I do love the music in gen 3, and the cities were GOAT. The remakes were awesome too, and they're really the only way to properly play gen 1.
2. Massively improved on gen 1 in every way. Fantastic pokemon designs, huge amount of content, great fanservice, Kanto in addition to Johto, etc.
4. Platinum was really good. Gen 4 was in my opinion the pinnacle of competitive pokemon. HGSS are, like I said before, arguably the best pokemon games. I never really liked gen 4 but it's grown on me.
5. I actually never played BW2, but I'm still salty over the fact that there was no Hoenn remake here. I really did love the protag designs in BW and the starters were pretty good. The new system in which you had more than 1 rival was awesome. The cities were good, environments not as much.
1. I like Kanto, less than Hoenn and Johto, but 1 is so glitchy, has so many graphical issues (see: half of the sprites in the game), and has the many issues that you would expect of the first game in the series released long before the others. Balancing issues also a problem. The whole "The problem with Gen 1" image says it all, really.
