Beginning her journey, Serena sought only to become more famous and loved, believing beauty and perfection were what all counted. Calem attempted to try and reason with her, and Shauna emulate her. Her meeting with a Lucario owned by Korrina allowed her to see a different side of beauty, one that's deeper and more understanding. She later learns her former sentiments are what led to Lysandre going mad and attempting to destroy the world except everything he deemed beautiful. She defeats Lysandre in battle, and while attempting to reason with him that there's beauty in even the ugliest of things, it goes in deaths ears as Lysandre destroys himself. Serena continues her journey, and becomes champion. During the celebration match, she's greeted by AZ, whom she met earlier, they battle and exchange their own personal growth of understanding what is beautiful, a sharp contrast to their own personal vanities, one of which AZ regrets as it cost his beloved pokemon, whom he misses. After the battle, his pokemon, Floette returns, and in a heartwarming reunion, Serena whispers lovingly of that to be truly beautiful.
