Right now she sees herself behind Ash, in his (blissful, at least to her?) shadow. But eventually she realizes that to be someone like Ash, she has to be strong enough so they can walk together. Or rather, I should say she always knew. She remembers their first time after all, obviously.
Hell, she may have already begun down that path. Remember that scene where Ash helped her up? Imo, Serena already did a mirror of that when she came up to him and helped him (spiritually) back up when he was down.
Bonus points if on the night before they part ways, she talks to Delia, who of course always knew she'd come back, since those years ago. So that she can talk to us indirectly and say what she knows she can't say to Ash yet.
