I mean Pokémon already fulfills its base purpose which is a game where you battle and trade monsters. How many are kept and cut can be defended in the name of simplicity, especially in the interest of development time. What areas are accessible and how much can be defended in the name of keeping the core audience (children) invested and able to accomplish beating the league. What move animations look like and should look like might be a ground to stand on but again, simplicity and player investment are key so they'll err on that. What moves are cut can also be justified in the name of changing up game flow and what choices are made during tournaments.
Fan disappointment is valid, but from a functional standpoint and in Nintendo's eyes, Pokémon is reasonably on par. Miyamoto probably won't be that much in your corner, especially not post-Iwata Miyamoto.
