These people don't have enough going on in their lives to value their time, so the tiny amount of power they receive from these unpaid work opportunities ends up being very important to them. They finally have SOMETHING in their lives that they have significant control over, so they exercise as much control as they possibly can within that position. If they act chill and let things slide, that means they are giving up control. They NEED to behave like a tyrant because it gives their life meaning. The only reason anything gets approved at all is because either someone has bargained with them or the thing is obviously qualified and they might lose power when everyone else approves it.
This is the same reason why middle aged women tend to be the most anal retentive, micro managing, petty dictators in existence. They have no children to care for/boss around, their husbands aren't attracted to them any more, and they have menopause. It's ten times worse if they never married and have to compete with younger women on Tinder, and a hundred times worse if they never had children before running out of eggs. They will latch on to literally anything that gives them authority and burn it to the fucking ground just to have a little more control over their lives.
