Before Fairy, magic was grouped with Psychic, as was ESP (though Psychic did have some arbitrary typings given out). But when Fairy was introduced it was baffling what Pokemon were given retcons and why.
Fairy type now seems to consist of mythological fae-like creatures (but not all), magical creatures (but not all), cute pink Pokemon, and when Gamefreak needs a dual typing but doesn't know what to give.
There's a lot of arbitrary Fairy mons, but pic related I think is a great one. There's nothing about the design that indicates it being fairy-like at all. It's lore of "it purifies air" seems like the only justification, which is just exceptionally flimsy.
That's the issue with Fairy types, it just doesn't feel coherent with how it's implemented.
